Nearly ten years had passed and the Lygean Venture Scout Unit had the unique opportunity to return to Kenya, to re-live the experiences and to complete the building project started by Hertfordshire Scouts. Sunday 16 July 2000: In 1990 a group of Venture Scouts and leaders from Hertfordshire travelled to Africa to take part in an aid project to help the people of Kenya. Nearly ten years had passed and the Lygean Venture Scout Unit had the unique opportunity to return to Kenya, to re-live the experiences and to complete the building project started by Hertfordshire Scouts.

Our hosts escorted us to a large bus in the car park and we proceeded to cram ourselves and our luggage into the bus. After a long, bumpy and very scarry journey in the bus we arrived at the Tsavo Park Hotel in Voi and had a slap up meal. We finally arrived in Wundanyi late in the evening. On our first full day in Kenya we were awoken to bright sunshine streaming in through the church windows. We got up and made ourselves presentable for the small church service to meet some of the locals. While one or two of the ventures went to survey the state of the building work, the rest of us went down into Wundanyi village to purchase provisions. The village was bustling with people and consisted of lots of small concrete units. We were woken up just after dawn to start working on the building. We had to remove lots of earth from stupid places and carry bricks from one pile to another. We had to keep dodging the lumps of wood that were being taken down from the roof. By lunch time we had started work on the first three wall sections. The group had also been hard at work constructing a shower from banana leaves and Mercy's gate. It was only a few feet away from where everyone else was seated at meal times in the evening and cries of hurry up were common. The water (from a bag with a hose attached) was warm if you were lucky, but more often than not it was cold. After breakfast ten of us walked up the hill to the Today was our group's turn to cook and do all of the odd jobs. We cooked eggy bread for breakfast before half of us went down to the village in the Jeep. After doing some hard work (more shifting of mud) in the morning, we set of at 2pm in the Love Bus to the Tsavo Park Hotel. After a cold Tusker in the hotel bar we set off with a Maasai bloke into the Tsavo East National Park. We watched the sun go down over the park and then we arrived at the campsite at Aruba Dam. We then spent the daytime around the camp haggling with the traders on the curio stall and watching the herds of animals heading down to the water to drink. We then went to the Voi Safari Lodge and watched the elephants from their elephant hide. A tame Hyrax at the Voi Safari Lodge The building is still full of loads of mud that all has to be shifted we spent the whole day digging (along with the mandatory Great Escape jokes). Unfortunately, after we had spent all day digging, the foreman (Mr Boombastic) informed us that it was not deep enough and we had Cooking for the workers. A well earned break in the building work. A demonstration of the Kenyan way of building After lunch we all set off up Wessu Rock that overlooked the village. We took Maasai man with us because it was his day off and he wanted to go to Mombasa. On the way he showed us a Maasai village (where brightly coloured men jump very high). Having had two very active and exciting weeks (plus a late night in chameleon), most of us chose to take things easy and enjoy the poolside facilities on offer in our own hotel. We had been promised a trip out to sea on a Dhow boat, with a 60-80% chance of seeing dolphins. In reality we would not see any dolphins because it was the wrong time of year. We then went out on the reef to do some snorkeling before coming back for lunch consisting of Ostrich, Zebra and Crocodile Kebabs. Hig Kenyan fashion Having seen the reef using snorkels we decided to go for a better way to see it. A group of us made our way to the hotel next door to SCUBA school run by a strange bloke called Sven. The Final Meal at the Tamarind restaurant in Mombassa Dancing on the tables in the Chameleon Bar Some Kenyan Scouts we met at the airport.
